| the bit that you are grinding away is a counter weight. When your all said and done it has to balance out against the rod/pistion about the axis of rotation. I'm not completeley sold on knife edging in the first place since the crank moves angularly the only windage benefit is going to be from the minimal loss of frontal area. If you are going to shape something it should be the leading and trailing edges of the counterweight, not the circumference. I wouldn't worry about doing the heads yourself as long as you stay away from sensative areas like the valve seats. Smoothing out the runners and port matching shouldn't be beyond anyones capability (although I've never attempted it). I think if it's a spare motor and your obviously interested in DIY'ing it then you should definately go for it.
